Tool for interaction or snooping?
Many child welfare, foster and day care as well as learning organizations have for years used ”child oriented” tools like the Bears Cards as part of their work and therapy processes. Officially they are used as means of interaction but no research about the purposes or effects of use have been made yet.
The Bears Cards is a pack of cartoon bears with different facial expressions. According to children and parents in Finland, the Bears Cards have been and are used as means of snooping, criminal investigation and evidence of the need for foster care in child welfare, day care and schools.
October movement is a NGO of families aiming to improve procedures and practices of institutions working with families.
We would like to investigate how the Bears Cards are used outside of Finland. We kindly ask all children and parents to share their experiences of the Bears Cards.
We would like you to tell us:
1. Why and how were the Bears Cards used?
Who did use The Bears Cards and how? Where? Were you and your children informed or asked a permission? What was the purpose of the Bears Cards game according to a) officials b) your opinion?
Were Bears Cards used as means of investigation of the need for foster care? Were they used as part of criminal investigation or as proof of guilt?
2. What interpretations, documentations and records were made from Bears Cards?
What interpretations and conclusions were made from the Bears Cards and how were they grounded and used? How were they documented?
3. Were you informed of or able to participate in processes connected to Bears Cards?
Were you aware of / shown the documents or able to participate in the interpretation/ documentation/ legal processes based on Bears Cards?
4. What were the effects of the Bears Cards interpretations on your life?
Did Bears Cards interpretations cause effects on your treatment in social and health services, your living conditions, family relations, participation or legal protection? What kind of effects?
